  SABRINA MATOS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF RHODE ISLAND Sabina Matos is the 70th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Rhode Island. She was appointed to the office in 2021 and elected to a full term in November 2022. She is the first person of color to hold this post in Rhode Island and the first Dominican-American to hold statewide office in the United States. As Lieutenant Governor, Sabina Matos chairs statewide policy councils on emergency management, small business, and healthcare, manages veterans service programs, and advocates for housing equity. She has made empowering independent grocery stores a focus of her time in office by introducing legislation to restrict unfair trade practices by megastores and helping the National Supermarket Association establish their New England headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to her current role, Lieutenant Governor Matos served on the Providence City Council from 2011 until 2021. In 2019, she was the first Latina elected to be City Council President. Lieutenant Governor Matos immi- grated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1994 and graduated from Rhode Island College in May of 2001. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island, with her husband and their two children.
